One of our favorite parts of the competition is learning from the brilliant minds of student investors. Their passion for financial literacy, investing and personal growth is inspiring!
Over the competition, we will share and highlight our Ambassadors who are leading from the front at their school. We've asked them some questions about investing experience, stock strategies, and advice to fellow participants, investors, and students.
Meet Suveer Seemangal
Q: How did you get involved with investing? How much investing experience would you say you have to date?
A: “I got involved with investing in high school, in 2012. I had a journalism teacher that showed the class a documentary on a hedge fund manager, and I was hooked immediately. I peppered my teacher with questions about the industry, the required schooling, and how I can get started. My teacher was a big believer in project-based learning, so he recommended some books I can read on investing like "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham, and others such as "Hedge Fund Market Wizards" by Jack Schwager. He also pointed me in the direction of paper-trading software like TD Ameritrade's Think or Swim. Over the course of the semester, I tore through the readings and paper traded and decided that I wanted to make a career out of investing. As of writing, I have about six years of trading experience using live capital. "
Q: What’s your go-to investing strategy? Do you have any particular companies or industries that you’re drawn to?
A: “My core investment strategy is top down long/short equity. I believe that analyzing macro trends in the global economy, followed by identifying growing or slowing industries within a respective country allows me to then identify companies that could potentially be good long/short plays. Over the past year, I've been working with colleagues that have a quantitative background to help me build a more systematic approach to make the identification process more seamless. I've traded companies in various industries, but I've gravitated towards the Utilities and REITS sector recently given the global growth slowdown. I believe companies like American States Water Co (AWR) and Landmark Infrastructure Partners (LMRK) not only have defensive business models that can resist an economic slowdown, but coupled with their low betas and solid dividend yields, they'll be able to generate alpha as we near the end of an economic cycle. "
Q: If you could give other investors one tip, what would it be?
A: "Allow your investment idea to be challenged by your colleagues. After doing extensive research, it's easy to develop an investment bias. Ask your colleagues to take the opposite of your viewpoint- it'll force you to think of your investment more holistically."
Q: Why did you choose to join the Voleo Student Equity Competition?
A: "My school, Hofstra University, was entered in to the Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium, where Voleo was the platform that we utilized. Our team thought that this would be the perfect platform to test strategies that were designed using different points of view on the market. "
Q: Any favourite investors, investing books or investing quotes you'd like to share?
A: "I'm a big fan of Ray Dalio's books, "Principles", and "Big Debt Crisis". I believe some staple readings are "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith," Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" by Charles Mackay, "More Money than God" by Sebastian Mallaby, and "Thinking Fast & Slow" by Daniel Kahneman."
